Saver to Investor: Lessons from Sweden

J.P. Morgan Asset Management commissioned a survey to understand the savings behaviour of European households. In partnership with Opinium, we surveyed 17,000 adults aged 18 to 65 across Europe. In Sweden, 2,000 adults were surveyed.

          Key findings

Exemplary policies have boosted the Swedish population’s participation in capital markets …

Almost 40% of the Swedish population have the majority of their savings in stocks, much higher than the European average.

... reducing dependence on the state …

Only one-fifth of the population expect to be reliant on the government to fund retirement.

… and helping individuals undertand the long-term financial returns stocks offer

Almost 30% of respondents think that stocks will deliver the best long-term returns, much higher than the European average.

Despite being better ‘allocated’ than European peers, Swedes are not confident about their retirement outcome

Less than one half of the population are confident they will have their desired standard of living in retirement.

Using professional advice could improve confidence …

Friends and family are the most common source of financial information and support.

… and support individuals who are not investing due to a lack of knowledge

Of those not investing in stocks, lack of investment knowledge is the most commonly cited impediment.
