        Bond Bulletin

        An OAT-rageous autumn in France

        GI
        GFICC Investors
        Published: 08-10-2026
French government bonds (Obligations assimilables du Trésor, or OATs) have just endured one of their most violent repricings in over a decade, with OAT-Bund spreads soaring from below 100 basis points (bps) to roughly 160 bps in a matter of weeks. In this week's Bond Bulletin, we explore why French paper has sold off so sharply, how much of the move is fundamental versus technical, and what the episode means for fixed income investors.

        Implications for Fixed Income investors

The near-term driver has been technical rather than fundamental. As the positioning overhang clears, there is scope for perhaps 10-20bps of spread tightening. We would stay neutral on OATs while retaining a modest overweight in Italy to express a pro-risk carry stance.

A durable turn requires a policy pivot, most plausibly a credible 2027 budget or an election outcome that delivers a working parliamentary majority. Until then, the dominant risk is bond market volatility feeding into other asset classes rather than an outright French solvency problem. We would resist adding French duration.

        About the Bond Bulletin

Each week J.P. Morgan Asset Management's Global Fixed Income, Currency and Commodities group reviews key issues for bond investors through the lens of its common Fundamental, Quantitative Valuation and Technical (FQT) research framework.

Our common research language based on Fundamental, Quantitative Valuation and Technical analysis provides a framework for comparing research across fixed income sectors and allows for the global integration of investment ideas.
