J.P. Morgan Asset Management commissioned a survey to understand the savings behaviour of European households. In partnership with Opinium, we surveyed 17,000 adults aged 18 to 65 across Europe. In Finland, 1,000 adults were surveyed.
Key findings
The Finns are not confident about their retirement outcome …
Only 8% of the Finnish population are very confident they will have the standard of living they desire in their retirement.
… and lack a plan
Only 17% of individuals have a concrete savings plan to fund their retirement.
But are reasonably self-reliant
Unlike European peers, participants are not expecting to be reliant on the state to fund their retirement.
The Finns have greater participation in financial markets than most European peers …
Almost 40% of the Finnish population have the majority of their savings in stocks, much higher than the European average.
… and understand that stocks have the potential to deliver the best long-term returns
Almost one third of respondents said that they felt stocks were likely to provide the best returns when saving for retirement.
But there is still work to be done
A lack of investment knowledge is still holding some potential investors back.
