This slide provides an overview of the rising economic inequality in the U.S., which is fueling the growth in financial assets relative to GDP (left). On the top right, we show the ratio of mean wealth to income by age group. On the bottom right of the page, we show the ratio of median wealth to income by age group. These two charts illustrate that while the mean retiree looks more prepared for retirement now than thirty years ago, the improvement is substantially reduced when looking at median income. Given the rising economic inequality in the U.S., retirees are hardly better off than they were 30 years ago, and younger adults (ages 54 and below) are actually worse off.
