At the Hotel de Russie in Rome, Italy, philanthropists from across Europe joined us for a dinner and conversation about “how philanthropists prioritize.” The guest list was selected to ensure robust participation in a high-level discussion. An interesting trend we discovered is that next generation philanthropists are setting up and spending down their foundations far sooner than philanthropists from previous generations. The next gen tends to support causes rather than specific communities.

Target the right opportunities to make a difference

When done well, philanthropy can create tremendous, positive change in the lives of others and for our world.

Once philanthropists identify the cause they wish to focus on, it is important to think about what strategies are most effective in creating positive change. This often requires understanding, research and collaboration.
Ask the questions:

  • Where is the real need?
  • Are other philanthropists working in this area? What are their goals? What have they been able to accomplish?
  • Are there gaps in funding that you might be able to address?
  • Given your resources (time, talent and treasure), what might you truly hope to accomplish, alone or in partnership with others?
  • How will you assess whether your efforts have had the desired impact?

Information about your Investments and Potential Conflicts of Interest

Morgan managed strategies will be high (in fact, up to I00 percent) in strategies such as, for example, cash and high-quality fixed income, subject to applicable law and any account-specific considerations.

While our internally managed strategies generally align well with our forward looking views, and we are familiar with the investment processes as well as the risk and compliance philosophy of the firm, it is important to note that J.P. Morgan receives more overall fees when internally managed strategies are included. We offer the option of choosing to exclude J.P. Morgan managed strategies (other than cash and liquidity products) in certain portfolios.
