One critical piece of sustainable development is renewable energy. The chart on the left shows planned additions and retirements in electricity generating capacity in the U.S. by type. The planned growth in wind and solar is particularly robust, while the planned decline in coal and natural gas is notable. On the right, we show where the commodities needed to support the growth in renewable energy technology are found across the world. As you will see, the U.S. heavily relies on other countries to produce these inputs.
