Awards

Here's how J.P. Morgan Investment Trusts were ranked - by industry experts and by investors themselves.

Moneywise Investment Trust Awards 2019, 2018 & 2017

  • 2019 winners for Investment Trust Group of the Year and Best Global Emerging Markets Trust
  • 2018 winners for Investment Trust Group of the Year, Best Global Emerging Markets Trust and Best North America Trust
  • 2017 winner of Best Global Emerging Markets Trust

The 2019 awards evaluated ten sectors: Asia Pacific Ex Japan, Europe, Global, Global Emerging Markets, North American and North American Smaller Companies, Property Direct UK, UK All Companies, UK Equity and Bond Income, UK Equity Income & UK Smaller Companies.

For each sector the AIC provided us with performance data over three, five and seven years (to 31/01/2019). Trusts were ranked on market return over three years. Moneywise aggregated performance over each period to calculate the top trusts in each sector and used the AIC data to create shortlists of the top performing trusts. These shortlists were sent to a panel of independent judges who were asked to vote for their top three trusts in each sector, taking into account: suitability for Moneywise readers, risk, manager ability, investment strategy, consistency, prospects and value for money in addition to performance.

The shortlist for investment group of the year was based on the number of appearances each group made in the sector shortlists. Moneywise then asked the judges to vote for their top two.

Sector categories

The quantitative screens for the sector categories is the same as in previous years and will be provided using Morningstar data.

All performance data is run up to 30 June 2018 in percentage terms. Those without a three-year track record to 30 June 2018 are not included in the main award categories but may be shortlisted in the New Issue category. No total assets minimum - all companies of all sizes are kept in and the judging panel will screen out at a later date if considered too small.

Within each sector, companies have their NAV returns measured over three discrete periods: 12 months to 30 June 2018, 12 months to 30 June 2017 and 12 months to 30 June 2016, as well as their cumulative NAV return for the full three year period.

Returns over the 12 months to 30 June 2018 the NAV returns are given a 40% weighting, the 12 months to 30 June 2017 are given a 30% weighting and the 12 months to 30 June 2016 accounts for 20% of the overall score. The final 10% weight is given to the full cumulative NAV return over the three years to 30 June 2018.

These scores are added up to give a single quants figure out of 100, the highest of which will be shortlisted for consideration. Results are sorted according to Investment Week award categories and then by aggregated awards score (descending).

Shortlisted trusts and their boards will be contacted by Investment Week and asked to submit a questionnaire, which will be used in the qualitative judging stage.

Best New Issue Award

Awards data consists of TA, MC, NAVTR and SPTR for each 12 month period, Discount at the end of June 2016, 2017 and 2018 and launch assets.

NB: Companies that are not pricing will be excluded from the stats

Moneyfacts Awards 2018 & 2017

Best Investment Trust Provider 2018 & 2017

The finalists and eventual winners of the Investment Life & Pensions Moneyfacts Awards are decided by a combination of methods. Two elements make up the product-specific categories: the first is a financial adviser voting process that took place between 5 March 2018 and 18 May 2018, whereby advisers were asked to nominate their top three providers across the full range of protection, retirement and investment products. Advisers were free to nominate any providers they wished, rather than having to select from a pre-determined shortlist. These results were then given over to the analytical expertise of the Moneyfacts data team, who thoroughly examined each provider's product pricing and features during the preceding 12-month period to come to the final decisions.
