Global supply chains have been disrupted by the pandemic, leading to rising input costs and having knock on effects on global manufacturing. The chart on the right shows the cost of container shipping globally in the form of the HARPEX which reflects the worldwide price developments in the charter market for container ships. This indicates the demand to move goods but also supply as many container ships found themselves in the wrong ports due to COVID. The chart on the right is an index tracking the delivery times of inputs into the manufacturing sector. As the line falls, the time taken to receive inputs rises and could delay production of finished goods leading to rising prices and inflation.
