Australia has a heavy reliance on trade, particularly in bulk commodities such as iron ore and coal. Exports have come into focus as the political relationship with China has changed. China is not the only market that Australia sells to but is a key one for certain bulk commodity exports. The chart on the left breaks down Australian exports into the main categories and those impacted by China for exports as a whole and those that only go to China. Some of the value are very small in economic terms. The right hand chart shows how the country's current account position has swung from a deficit to a surplus thanks to rising iron ore prices.
