Sustainable investing: plan for the future you want to see

    Oct 2021 (3-minute read)

    J.P. Morgan Asset Management

    Key takeaways:

    • We share our perspectives on sustainable investing, our approach and what we strive to achieve1.
    Why sustainable investing matters?
    • Investors are increasingly looking for investment solutions that reflect not only their financial goals but also their values and beliefs.

    • Economies and corporations are increasingly developing the expertise, best practices and technology relevant to achieving sustainable development goals.

    • We believe that consideration of material environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors should be an important part of the investment process1. It is clear to us that ESG factors will increasingly affect companies’ ability to successfully operate and generate returns, today and over the long term.

    • Our approach to sustainable investing builds on our long heritage of active management and stewardship, and the expertise of our analysts, who incorporate ESG factors in their research process.
How do we integrate ESG in our investment process?
    • Since 2016, we have committed to incorporating ESG factors into our investment processes for active strategies across our investing platform, where material and relevant.

    • Going further than ESG integration, our sustainable investment capabilities are designed to align even more with our clients’ financial goals and values. We offer a spectrum of approaches, from screening out companies in certain industries to targeting best in class opportunities.

     ESG promote

    Promote environmental and/or social characteristics.

     Positive tilt

Tilted towards sectors, companies or projects with positive ESG characteristics; exclude certain companies based on ESG criteria.

    Best in class

Invest in companies that lead their peer groups in ESG performance; exclude certain companies based on ESG criteria.

    Thematic

Invest with a thematic focus on a UN Sustainable Development Goal or other specific ESG themes.

    Our sustainable investing capabilities
    JPMorgan Global Macro Sustainable Fund
    • The JPMorgan Global Macro Sustainable Fund employs our tried and tested macro process sustainably to help investors align their financial goals with their values.

    • We strive to deliver positive returns in varying market environments, offering investors a source of diversified return with low long-term correlation to traditional assets.

    • As macro investors, we invest in shares, bonds and other assets. But rather than starting with company specifics, we start with the big picture. We seek to identify the large external forces, such as climate change, that can drive the performance of companies, asset classes and markets over time2,3.

    • When selecting investments to reflect our macro views we carry out an in-depth ESG assessment in order to lean into companies and government bonds with better ESG/sustainability characteristics, while we do not invest in industries and activities that would be considered unsustainable.
